Some Design Notes On Summer ROFLThing

Was talking with my brother yesterday (after the amazingly ridiculous July 4th weekend — sorry for not posting), and he rightly mentioned that I’ve been completely lame on not posting up Brian Raftery’s awesome article about ROFLCon in the most recent Wired Mag (getting quoted about Goatse: excellent).
Usually keep ROFL-stuff on here to a minimum, but been playing around with some thoughts on some of the events that we’ve got coming up that are still discombobulated, so I’m dumping here. So, the big news recently is that we’ve nailed SF’s classy-ass Mighty for August 29th. It’s an awesome space, and its looking like we’ll be able to get a goodly sized number of people in there. Working out the details on reg — posting them to roflcon.org when it gets ironed out.
The Good News (which got blogged about): We’ve confirmed Waxy.org’s Andy Baio to talk about Star Wars Kid. Never seen him talk, but I’ve been stalking his stuff online for about forever and hearing recommendations from basically everyone, and it should be positively badass.
The Interesting News: SF-ROFLThing is going to be a Friday evening event, which means we’re pretty limited on time. In an effort to use it as awesomely as possible (since we’ll be starting later to allow people to get out from work), I’m thinking about doing something along the format of Ignite or Thingamajiggr, with a set of awesome people giving relatively short talks followed by a range of random fun stuff during an open bar. We’ve got Andy, but I’m starting to throw arond some ideas for other speakers/mini-events. There’s lots of flex, so long as people are cool (and preferably West Coast based for flights), I’m way open to getting them involved. Broadly, throwing out some ideas, I’m thinking:
-Something webscomicsy
-Bubb Rubb Woo woo! (if we can find him — thanks, all, for reminding me about that)
-Someone who can talk about the Fail Whale phenomenon
-Someone who can do something historical about a meme/tech scene. I’m not too familliar with the space outside of J.Scott (see his profoundly good talk here), but I’m willing to be there’s more than a few people doing online culture stuff floating around in the area…
-Anyone who we invited for the original conference back in April but missed (aka “The Weezer Gang”)
Dunno — just some developing ideas — thoughts?
