Software Version of Tenori-On Now Available →
Some of you might be familiar with Yamaha’s ridiculously awesome abstract “new instrument for the 21st century,” the Tenori-On. The thing consists of a 16 by 16 grid of LED switches which are manipulated to shape a light (sound) wave passing over the face of the unit (i.e. rated “fabulous” by the USBFB).
Check out some videos of it in action. I swear...

The Two Bit Processor Project: Introduction
This sharp-looking dude is Chris Kelty — Anthropologist. Artist. Hero. Enormously Famous Academic.
His recent book “Two Bits,” an ethnographic study of Free Software geeks and their cultural significance, was recently released. Beyond being an unprecedented study in many ways, Kelty is encouraging readers to get out there and remix his scholarship in a series of...
Good Co-opting/Bad Co-opting
Two recent videos crossed across the bloghopper that bear some comparison:

Three Big Problems: The Future of CC
Was at the 1st Creative Commons (CC) Technology Conference yesterday, doing my intern duties as a conference coverage blogger (pseduo-liveblogging). All in all a pretty good group of educators, free culture junkies, entrepreneurs, and Internet people.
Though the panels and conference events lasted all day, a few basic themes kept repeating themselves in much of the discussion during the breaks...
The Internet is really good for porn and shoes, but not so much for science

CC Tech Summit Evening Reception - 6/18/08.
LOTS of notes/comments clogged up from today, will do a bigger sum up post tomorrow. In the meanwhile, less blog-editorializing, more hastily compiled coverage here at the CC Techblog.
MY REEDS! MY FUCKING REEDS!
– I swear this is going to be the next big online cultural phenomenon. It’s been percolating in various random places, but hasn’t quite made it to the big leagues yet. Internet, meet the ridiculous, punctuation impaired childhood recollections of one DAVE SECRETARY. It’s endlessly...

Image Management Blooper #940
In the June 9 & 16, 2008 issue of The New Yorker:
He was, of course, driven to the Grammies in one of these big babies:
And, appears here in a promotional for his label Disturbing Tha Peace in one of these:
Sneaking suspicion that there’s probably not some bleeding edge low-emission fuel-efficient engines under the hoods of these things.
Wah wah wah waaaaaaaah.
Television's Cylon Transition
Now that I’ve settled down into S.F., I’ve been nosing around catching up on telelvision shows and various bits and pieces of media that people have been recommending to me for the best few months and that I haven’t gotten around to seeing yet. One of these, Battlestar Galactica, is someting I lost track of around the second season or so, which is a shame — because...
Dude, Puzzle-Home Sweet Puzzle-Home →
So good. Bob Vila should have a “This Incredibly Whimsical House” show.
I’d watch it.
Long Tail In Action: Remarkably Specific Blogs →
What a remarkably specific and insanely morbid blog to have for THREE YEARS running. I can only imagine what it’s like editing this thing. That being said, there’s a pretty vigorous community that seems to follow it regularly. The comments threads on this thing are great (and weirdly moralizing). Case in point.
Oddly enough, B5Media lists this under their “lifestyles”...
Bold New Experiments In Blogging
Figure 1: The USBFB Conceptual Map of Bloggin
Been thinking lately about the development of personal blogging over the past decade or so — which led to this diagram, which led to an idea for a project (below). Historically, since the popularization of Blogger and other initial dedicated blog publishing tools, it seems like the blogosphere has been moving from the top left corner to...
Showing Viral Marketing Who's Boss
Was at the WWDC Ars Technica/Gizmodo party that went down tonight at Harlot, just down the street from Creative Commons HQ. Didn’t have much to do after work, so a bunch of the interns ended up grabbing dinner and meandering over to get into the party. Ended up being an awesome time: ran into Scott and a bunch of the good folks I hadn’t seen since ROFLCon, and got to talk to people...
Metaphors For Stoopid Young Kids →
A thousand promises over that this will be the last mini-post before we got back to delicious long-winded mode (been working through Clay Shirky’s Here Comes Everybody recently, which plays with some “freakin’ sweet” intellectual tensions with how Benkler characterizes the web in Wealth of Networks)
In any case, Alex Leavitt wades into the confusing back-and-forth about...
Two Bits →
In the continuing sporadic series of blog posts in “Tim’s Been Busy Graduating and Moving to San Francisco And Too Busy To Post At Length” land, I’m happy to announce today that Chris Kelty, the absolutely awesome moderator of the final panel at ROFLCon, has recently come out with his book, Two Bits, a study of the history and development of Free Software as a movement.

The Alpha Geeks →
Sorry about the delay in blogging — I’ve been completely snowed under what with packing up/graduating/getting ready to move to San Fran on Saturday. More stuff to come soon. In any case, caught this article a little while back and it seemed worth posting.
Even though it’s poorly researched and all in all a pretty jankity crank bit of analysis, I think the point about Prez Bush...
Experiment: Tim's Girlfriend Asks Him Questions...
(Hurley, some guy on Lost who looks like some goddamn magic polar bear)
Allie, my girlfriend, watches television. Lots of television. One recent obsession of hers is ABC’s hit show “Lost.” I’ve never seen Lost. In fact, most of my fragmentary knowledge about the show comes from her verbal accounts of episodes she’s seen, various forwarded Onion AV comment...
Another Gen Yer Takes A Crack at Lanham →
Another Gen Y response to the “Generation Slap” article I was writing about a few days ago. Not bad. Kind of still in that fluffy snarky loveable Radar style, but worth giving a spin.
When Daleks Were Scary
As villains with a storied history in the science fiction pantheon, I have to say that Daleks have never particularly impressed me. Sure they have a fantastically awesome catch phrase, but for a species without remorse bent on taking over the universe, their character design is kitschy as all hell. British kids laugh at the Daleks.
I mean, come on, they were slotted to be in a porn. A...
